Associate Scientist

This is a Full-time position in Minneapolis, MN posted March 2, 2021.

Description:Top 3 skills required would be:1) Experience with materials testing, microscopy processing and analysis2) Knowledge or experience with metallurgy and joining technologies3) Knowledge or experience with regulated industry (ideally medical device)Position DescriptionThe Material Scientist I works with other scientists, engineers, and technicians to provide problem solving, material testing, and data analysis that supports Quality Control, Product Development, and Technology Research.

The individual will work under supervision as part of a laboratory team focused on metallography, weld penetration, failure analysis, and the associated preparatory techniques.

The individual will perform testing; author, review, approve, reports; support document creation and updates; and participate in continuous improvement projects for the lab.

The role functions as part of a Laboratory that works under ISO17025 requirements in the medical device field.Position Responsibilities* Execute hands-on sample preparation and testing including:o Equipment set up, cleaning, troubleshooting, calibration, and operationo Sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching with acidso Use a microscope and other analysis tools for dimensional measurement and evaluation of surface featureso Use Vickers Hardness Tester to measure hardnesso Real time documentation of test protocols and data collection* Communicate results via detailed technical documents and presentations* Review work of lab technicians and provide coaching on preparation and analysis techniques* Participate in the development, improvement and maintenance of methods for testing medical device components and materials* Participate in the Installation and qualification of laboratory equipment* Participate in laboratory projects to coordinate and deliver on project tasks* Participate on cross functional teams that analyze technical or quality issues and contribute to the completion of work group objectives* Perform work in compliance with procedures, department policies and regulatory requirements* Perform general laboratory support including preparing chemical solutions and maintaining inventory of consumable suppliesBasic Qualifications* Bachelors degree in material science, metallurgy, or related technical discipline* Experience with materials testing, microscopy processing and analysis* Good written and verbal communication skills to interface effectively with clients, laboratory personnel, and other technical functions* Proficient with Microsoft Office programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel* Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced team environment* Ability to prioritize and execute on daily tasks while balancing longer term project tasks* Ability to work and be effective with basic supervisionDesired/Preferred QualificationsA successful candidate will have experience working in a laboratory setting.
